The University Interscholastic League recommended that Texas high schools suspend summer strength and conditioning and skill workouts from July 3-12 to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“For schools in areas experiencing community spread of COVID-19, this temporary suspension will reduce risk of exposure and provide an opportunity to review current plans and re-evaluate local contest in order to make informed decisions moving forward,” according to a statement released by the UIL via Twitter Wednesday, July 1.

“We had already planned to take this week off before the UIL released their statement,” said RHS Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Jacob Campsey. “I don’t feel a recommendation will help because that leaves room for some schools to have workouts and some to not have them.”

The Tigers will resume their workouts on Monday July 13. Thorndale and Milano high schools also canceled workouts this week and will resume workouts on July 13.

COVID cases continue to rise in Milam County. There were 112 cases as of Monday.

Hospitalizations from lab-confirmed COVID-19 have more than doubled in Texas in the last two weeks to 8,698, according to the Houston Chronicle. Since Memorial Day, hospitalizations spiked more than 400 percent.

The surge prompted Gov. Greg Abbott’s mandate requiring people to wear masks in counties that have more than 20 active coronavirus cases last Thursday. First-time violators will face a warning, while repeat offenders could be fined $250.

Barring any changes, RHS football will play their first game against the Leopards on Aug. 28 in La Grange.
