This past weekend was deja vu for Thorndale High School senior Hayden Kylberg, who won his second straight state powerlifting title at Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center last weekend.

The Bulldog squatted 600 pounds, benched pressed 425 and had a dead lift of 575 pounds for a total of 1,600, winning the 198-pound division by more than 200 pounds over La Villa’s Jerry Reyes. Kylberg made huge gains from the 2021 state contest, where he ended the season with a total lifting weight of 1,425.

ROCKDALE—T h e Blue-and-Gold also had two representatives in Abilene at the state powerlifting meet.

RHS senior Gavin Aguilar tied for fifth place with a squat of 640, bench press of 390 and a dead lift of 550 for an overall weight of 1580 in the 242-pound weight class.

Blue-and-Gold junior Kevin Liu placed 12th in the 148-pound division with a squat of 435, a bench press of 245 and a dead lift of 450 for a total of 1,130 pounds.

Liu broke school records in the squat and the bench press, which was set in 1998.

This was the first time either Rockdale lifter has qualified for the state powerlifting meet.

Both Rockdale and Thorndale saw a lot of success in powerlifting this season. The Tigers had 10 lifters qualify for regionals earlier this month while the Lady Tigers had 14 qualify.

THS also had many students qualify for regionals and had Landri Martinka, who placed sixth at the state meet last week.
