Milam County resident Connor Barton became the world champion breakaway roper at the National Junior High Rodeo Finals on Saturday, June 29, in Huron, S.D.

Barton started off the competition placing eighth with a time of 3.13 seconds in the opening round. The middle schooler bounced back in the following round with a first place finish and the fastest time of the entire event of 2.42.

He placed second in the finals with 2.85 seconds, but that was enough to be crowned the winner.

The National Junior High Rodeo Finals features more than 1,000 contestants from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Australia.

Barton is the son of Jason and Monica Barton of Cameron and will begin ninth grade at Yoe High this next month.
