Local parents are giving high school students the opportunity to play with their teammates despite losing their UIL season to COVID-19 in a High School Baseball Summer League.
Coach Brandon San Miguel announced many of the players on the Tiger varsity baseball team will participate in a High School Baseball Summer League for the first time ever.
The league which consists of nine teams began play mid-June. League teams are: Rockdale, Milano, Rodgers, Cameron, Harker Heights varsity and junior varsity, Rosebud-Lott and Temple varsity and junior varsity. Thorndale, Lexington and Academy dropped out of the league early on.
The Rockdale team has 24 players on its roster and is coached by parents. The league is not UIL sanctioned but is complying within UIL sport specific instructions rules. Coaches plan on splitting the group into varsity and junior varsity teams to keep the numbers low due to coronavirus precautions.
As per UIL rules, teams are prohibited from using their own fields. Each team agreed to play at the Airport Park Complex in Cameron or Baker Field in Temple.
During league play, umpires can no longer stand directly behind the catcher and must officiate the game from a distance. Social distancing is being practiced and handshakes are prohibited.
Saturday, June 20–Tiger varsity won a double header against Rosebud-Lott.
During the first game, the Tigers routed Rosebud-Lot 13-1. Pitchers Tra’on Crawford and Enrique Rivera worked together to earn a no-hitter.
RHS got on the board in the first inning. The Tigers scored three runs when Rivera doubled. They put the game out of reach in the second inning by tallying five runs. Pablo Hernandez, Ryan Blair, Jesus Bocanegra and Crawford each drove in runs during the inning.
Rivera lasted two innings on the hill for the Tigers, allowing zero hits and one run while striking out three and walking one. Rivera also went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead RHS in hits. During the second game,
During the second game, Rosebud-Lott played the game much closer, but the Tigers prevailed 5-3.
RHS got on the board fast when Mason Willard doubled on an 0-1 count, scoring a run. The Tigers scored another three runs in second inning as Aaron Avila hit a single for Hernandez to round in one run.
Rosebud attempted a comeback in the in the fourth by scoring two runs. However, the Tiger defense was able to hold on to the lead and ice the game on a walk by Hernandez.

Games will be scheduled on a weekly basis. The Tigers were set to play at 8 p.m. Wednesday against Rogers’ varsity on Cameron Field. Results will be in next week’s issue.
RHS will play Harker Heights Thursday at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Baker Field in Temple.
