For the second straight year, Rockdale High School junior Yolianna Castillo will play in the Region III tennis Howcourt tournament. ever, she won’t be alone on the this time and will be joined by sophomore Mason Willard after the pair won silver at the district tournament in Georgetown last week.
Castillo and Willard powered through the quarterfinals, beating an Academy team, 6-3, 6-1 before bouncing back from a 3-6 loss in the first set of their semi-final match with two straight 6-3 wins over a team from Caldwell.
The pair lost in the finals to Academy’s top team 6-3, 6-1, but still secured a spot in the regional tournament at College Station’s A&M Consolidated High School, April 11-12.
Beth Montelongo finished fourth out of 10 competitors in the girls singles division, while junior Grace Avrin placed fifth. Tra’on Crawford and Clarissa Herrera placed fifth in the mixed doubles division.
