Rockdale has a real star with senior cross country runner Jesus Bocanegra. He is a four-time state qualifier in his sport and his Coach Cheryl Meuth says this is “rare and huge accomplishment.”

His story is special. Coach Meuth randomly asked him out to run in seventh grade and she said she expected him to be a decent runner but he exceeded all of her expectations. Eventually she invited him to work out with the high school so he could be “pushed more.”

“The great thing about Jesus is that he is such a hard worker,” Coach Meuth said. “He wanted to work out not just with the high school but also with his junior-high teammates. I would have to set limits on him so he would not overwork himself. For two years he would do two workouts per day.”

Jesus is a natural runner who runs with courage, has a strong work ethic and all of this has emerged through his accomplishments. Congratulations to Jesus on a great high school career in the sport of cross country. We look forward to seeing what you do this spring on the track team.

Jesus is a four-time state qualifier and the 18th fastest runner in the state in 3A Division I.

Rockdale has a strong cross country program and part of its strength is its coach, Cheryl Meuth. Rockdale alum, accomplished runner and sports journalist Lee Nichols says we are fortunate to have someone of her caliber leading our long distance crew.
