The RHS boys cross country team continued their stellar season after placing fourth in the Regional Meet on Monday.
“I am so proud of the varsity boys team and their performance at regionals,” RHS Head Coach Cheryl Meuth said. “They are an extremely young, talented group and have so much room to grow next year as most of them are sophomores and freshmen.”
The meet featured Onalaska, McGregor, Eustace, East Bernard, Central Heights, Boling, North Caney Infinity, Rogers, Blooming Grove, Crockett, Fairfield, Warren, Palmer, Anahauc, New Waverly, Kirbyville, Winnie E Chambers, Caldwell, Pollok Central, West, Hunnington and Riesel.
The boys were required to run three miles for their race.
Jesus Bocanegra placed fifth with a time of 17:01. Chris Perez finished in 28th at 17:57. Jose Tenerio finished in 36th at 18:13. Yovonney Delgadillo placed 48th at 18:32. Cristo Hernandez placed 49th at 18:35. at 18:35. Albert Silva placed 79th at 19:30, while Diego Garza was 141st at 24:52.
The Tigers came just short of qualifying for the state meet as only the top three teams earned spots. However, Bocanegra will be attending the state meet as an individual runner.
“I want to thank God for giving me the strength in every step of the race,” Boconegra said. “I also want to say how proud I am of my teammates and how well they did. I want to thank my family, team and coach for their support. My biggest aim now is to be a state champion.”
Despite it being the end of the season for the rest of the team, Coach Meuth praised the group for their effort and dedication.
“One of the best parts of this group is their work ethic, and it not only showed in their regional performance, but in their entire season this year,” Meuth said. “I am the luckiest coach to get to work with such a hard working group of athletes. Their future is bright, and we will be making history in the coming years for sure!”
The state meet will be held at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock on Nov. 23.
