For the second straight year, Whitley Boyd will compete at the UIL Class 3A Golf State Championship Monday and Tuesday at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.

“I am super excited for the opportunity to play at state again,” Boyd said. “I honestly had no idea I could take it this far. I’m just ready to see how I can compete on the big stage.”

Boyd made her way to state after finishing the District 19-3A meet in early April as a third place medalist and doing the same at the Region III meet in late April. Both the region and the state meets take the top three golfers unattached to one of the top two placing teams.

“We’re excited for her. She’s worked hard at her game is very deserving of playing at state.” RHS Golf Coach Ethan Noel told the Reporter last week.

She shot a 107-113-220 at last year’s state meet and helped the Lady Tigers grab a bronze medal.

“It will be different without the rest of the girls. We were always pushing each other and we had so much fun on the trip to Austin,” Boyd said. “But the tremendous amount of love and support from my coaches, family and community means the world to me.”

At state, the RHS junior will have to go up against top players like McGregor’s Paige Gilstrap, who has finished second at the last two state championships and led the pack at regionals with a 76-81-157, nine strokes ahead of second place.

Boyd will tee of from the 10th hole Monday morning at 8:50 a.m. with New Diana’s Lauren James and Ingram Moore’s Kylie Cha-pa.

Tee times for Tuesday haven’t been released as of press time.
