Whitley Boyd weathered a three-hour rain delay and opponents to win her second straight trip to the UIL Class 3A girls golf state championship, after placing third among individual medalists at the Region III golf tournament last Thursday in Brenham.

Boyd was the bronze medalist behind Krista Velazquez of Palmer and Lani Hamilton of West. Aside from the top two teams, the top three medalists competing unattached to a team qualify for the state tournament.

“We’re excited for her. She’s worked hard at her game and is very deserving of playing at state,” said Ethan Noel, RHS golf coach.

Boyd ended her first day at the Brenham Country Club three strokes behind individual medalists Velasquez and two strokes behind Hamilton with a score of 88.

Senior Gracey Burns also played at the regional tournament for the third time in four years and was nine strokes behind Boyd with a 97.

Brenham received half an inch of rain and wind surges of up to 30 miles per hours last Wednesday, according to weather reports. This forced organizers to bring golfers indoors.

“We had a weather delay for about three hours on the first day,” Noel said. “But we were able to finish all eighteen holes that day and the weather ended up being great the next day so that made up for it.”

Boyd remained in third place on the second day with a total of 88-92-180. She finished five strokes behind first place finisher Velasquez and one stroke behind Hamilton. Burns finished in fourth place with a score of 97-101-198.

“Both of them played well. I’m happy with how they competed,” said Noel.

This was Burns final high school golf tournament. She was a four year-letterman for the Lady Tigers and a member of the 2016 and 2017 state teams that won bronze medals.

Boyd will go for the gold on May 13-14, at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.

TIGERS – Ross Loth will compete at the UIL Class 3A boys golf state championship on May 20-21 at the Grey Rock Golf Club.
