A 333-yard offensive rushing game and 26-points in the second quarter helped Thorndale roll past Rosebud-Lott 40-7 Friday in the Bulldog’s first District 13-2A D1 game of the season.
THS Head Football Coach Scott Hawkins said eliminating mistakes helped in the Thorndale victory.
“That made a huge difference in the second quarter,” he said.
The Cougars defense was no match for the Bulldogs’ running game. The Thorn-dale backfield rushed for 333 yards on 46 carries.
Running back Jagger Rubio lead the Bulldogs with 143 yards on 13 carries with one touchdown. Leschber had 91 yards on 13 carries with two touchdowns.
Three games into Thorn-dale’s season, both Rubio and Leschber are averaging more than 100 yards a game. Rubio has 354 yards on 36 carries, and Leschber has 335 yards on 41 carries. Rubio put Thorndale on the scoreboard first with a 13-yard run in the first quarter and Michael Herzog’s extra point kick was good.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored four times to the Cougars one touchdown by Ethan Easley. Leschber scored the first touchdown in the second quarter on a six-yard run and Herzog’s extra point was good.
Scott Guzman started the back-to-back scoring spree for the Bulldogs with a touchdown in the second quarter on a 15-yard run. The extra point by Herzog failed, but Herzog scored the next two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. The first came after a Rosebud-Lott player botched a kickoff return and he recovered the fumble for a 17-yard touchdown. The second was an 18-yard pass from quarterback Cayden Nicholson with seconds to go in the first half. Herzog missed the first extra point but made the second one.
The Bulldog defense stopped the Cougars from scoring for the rest of the game and Thorndale scored once more on one-yard run by running back Leschber in the fourth quarter.
“We still didn’t play well offensively in the second half,” Hawkins said. “We will have to fix some things.”
This week - The Bulldogs will play in their next district contest against the Holland Hornets.
The Hornets defeated the Bulldogs last year 38-27. In 2017, they went 4-1 in district 13-2A DI, and made it to the regional semi-finals before losing to state-championship finalist Refugio. The Hornets have three players returning on offense, and eight players returning on defense, including preseason defensive MVP, linebacker Clay Cooper.
“We will have to keep the ball out of their of hands and use as much clock as we can,” Hawkins said. “They have a very good defense, and we’ll need to have another good game.”
Kickoff starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at Bulldog Stadium.
