IOLA—In the battle between two dogs, it was the Thorndale Bulldogs that triumphed this past Friday night, taking down the Iola Bulldogs, 42-6.
THS built an early lead with a seven-yard touchdown run by Coy Stutts a little less than five minutes left in the first quarter. Although the extra kick was unsuccessful, Thorndale led 6-0 at the end of the first.
It was the next quarter when Stutts and company really began again on an eight-yard run. He also ran in the two-point conversion to give the Milam County Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.
Later in the quarter, he connected with sophomore Jayden Clawson, first on a 59-yard TD pass with 4:14 left in the half and once again in the final minute on a 21-yard pass. Thorndale led over Iola at halftime, 28-0. Iola scored a little more than two minutes into the third quarter thanks to a 17-yard run by Wesley Alexander. However, the other Bulldogs only cut the THS lead to 22, as the extra point kick didn’t fall between the goal posts. Thorndale scored again when Hunter Thigpen ran in his first touchdown of the year on a goal-line push. THS scored one last time on the final play of the third quarter when Stutts found Clason Beasley open for a 78-yard pass.
Thorndale went on to win, 42-6, grabbing their third straight victory.
STATS— Beasley led the team in receiving with 130 yards on three catches. Stutts racked up the majority of Thorndale’s rushing yards with 143 on 15 carries.
T HIS WEEK— The Bulldogs begin district play in Schulenburg this Friday.
The Shorthorns are 0-4 with losses to Universal City-Randolph, Rogers, Burton and Poth.
Kickoff between the two schools is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
JV— This past Thursday, Thorndale’s junior varsity defeated Iola, 26-12.
