After coming back from a 1-0 deficit in their area playoff series with Burton, the Thorndale Bulldogs will face Big Sandy for the third straight year in the playoffs.

“Big Sandy is a really good baseball team,” said Kelly Kuhl, THS head baseball coach. “They have knocked us out the last three years and have played in the state championship the past two years, winning it last season.”

“They still have all of those kids from the championship team too. We are going to have our spots on the mound, play flawless defense and put the ball in play to have a chance to win.”

The Wildcats are the Texas High School Coaches Association’s top-ranked team in class 2A as of Monday and took down Shiner 8-3 in a one-game showdown in Madisonville on Friday afternoon.

The two teams will square off for a third time in a best-of-three series with game one on Thursday, at Grand Oaks High School in Spring at 4:30p.m. Game two will be played on Friday, at Nutrabolt Stadium in Bryan at 5:30. If necessary, game three will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.

Thorndale bounced back from their 1-0 deficit with a 5-4 win in game two that went eight innings and an 8-3 win to close out the Panthers to clench a spot in the Region IV quarterfinals.

“Our guys just competed and we never gave up,” Kuhl said. “We told them going into game two that if we won it that there was a great chance of us winning the series.

“Burton did a great job of coming out and putting two runs up in the first but we did an even better job of keeping them at two runs and not letting the game get away from us. We had Ty Kovar deliver and give us six strong innings and Justin Paxton got the win coming in the final two innings.”

Kuhl also said pitching in game three was also key to their victory.

“Justin started game three and gave us five innings and Logan Davis won the game for us with his pitching in the last
