In their first game of the season, Thorndale went back-and-for th with Lexington, who came into the game as the 16th-ranked team in Class 3A-II, a classification above the Bulldogs.
However, it was the Lee County team and not the Milam County squad that came out on top, with LHS winning 35-33. Thorndale was the first to put points on the scoreboard, with Luke Merz putting the Bulldogs up 7-0. Lexington responded later in the quarter when Travis Balcar scored from the two-yard line to tie the game. Beasley caught fire in the third. The THS senior scored on a 75-yard kickoff return before taking back an interception for a 21-yard touchdown later in the quarter, putting the maroon-and-gold up 27-14. Before the close of the quarter, the Eagles started to swoop in as Daylon Washington made the score 27-21 after scoring on a 42-yard run.
Lexington took the lead in the fourth quarter, with a four-yard run by Balcar and another run by Washington to put the Eagles ahead, 35-27.
Thorndale fought back with a touchdown by Merz, but the two-point conversion failed, leading to a Thorndale loss.
Beasley led the Bulldogs with five catches for 121 yards and Jayden Clawson had three catches for 40 yards. Stutts was 9-of-28 from behind the center with 167 yards and one touchdown. The senior QB also rushed for 56 yards on 15 carries.
THIS WEEK— THS hits the road on Friday to face Granger, a Class 2A-II school.
The Lions are coming off a 28-6 win over Hubbard last week and are under new quarterback Nathan Tucker, who threw two touchdowns against the Jaguars.
Granger’s main force is running back D.J. McClelland, who had 15 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns against HHS. McClelland’s success is in large part to their experienced offensive line that includes Daryl Stefek, Jordan Rhoades and Marcus Martinez.
Kick-off between the two schools is at 7 p.m.
