The Thorndale Bulldogs were looking to remain unbeaten last Friday but came up short against the Centerville Tigers 14-30. The Bulldogs are now 2-1 on the season.
“It was a very physical game,” THS Head Coach John Kovar said. “We had some opportunities to win but we didn’t capitalize on them.”
Centerville scored first on a six-yard touchdown pass from Brant Roberts to Dillion Denman in the first quarter. Kaden Dunn converted on a three-yard run for the two-point conversion. The connection of Roberts and Denman struck again in the second quarter with the two connecting on a 28-yard touchdown. Paxton Hancock scored the two-point conversion with a three-yard run to give the Tigers a 16-0 lead.
Thorndale began their comeback attempt with Coy Stutts connecting with Branson McCoy on a 53-yard touchdown. Cain Brymer converted the twopoint conversion on a threeyard run. The score was 16-8 at the half.
With the game still close, the Bulldogs would score again on a 4-yard touchdown run by Brymer. The two-point conversion was no good. The Tigers responded with a 21-yard run by Hancock to extend their lead. The Centerville defense made their impact on the game with a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by Halston French to make the score 30-14. Both teams would go scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Coy Stutts led the team in passing and rushing yards totaling 201 total yards and one touchdown on the day. Cayden Nicholas led the team in receiving with five catches for 78 yards.
With the Bulldogs going into their bye week, Coach Kovar says the goal will be getting everyone on the same page.
“We’re just trying to work on us this week,” Kovar said. “We want to make sure we’re on the same page on every offensive play and correct the basics on defense.”
The Bulldogs will look to get back in the win column as they will face the Moody Bearcats on Sept. 25.
