Thorndale toppled Hearne 63-28 on the road Friday night in what was the fight for second in District 13-2A-1
“I haven’t seen us play this well as a team all season,” said Scott Hawkins, THS head football coach and athletic director. “Hearne is an amazingly talented team and they can hurt you in every aspect of the game.
“They have tremendous speed, size and strength. But we played great defense.”
The Bulldogs got an early lead when Jagger Rubio scored on a 14-yard interception return on the third play of the game. Cain Brymer added two points on a run after the TD.
Hearne made it 8-7 when Jalen Gonzales caught a 75-yard TD pass from Micah Smith. Omar Leon made the PAT.
Thorndale created distance later in the quarter with two touchdowns including a seven-yarder by Rubio.
The game was 29-21 after two Eagle touchdowns and five-yard TD run by Michael Herzog for THS but Thorndale stayed ahead with another Rubio touchdown.
Gonzales also scored again for Hearne on a 20-yard pass from Smith but Thorndale 41-28 lead going into half time due to an 84-yard kick return by Branson McCoy.
The-maroon-and-gold put away the Eagles for good with three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter from Brymer, Rubio and Colt Cauble. The Bulldogs ended their night with a 63-28 win.
Herzog led Thorndale with 136 yards on 11 carries. McCoy also had two kickoff returns for 117 yards total.
After nine straight weeks of preparing for games, the Bulldogs are in the midst of their open week before playing Marlin next Friday.
“The open week comes at a perfect time,” Hawkins said. “We’ll take this time to rest and polish different aspects of our game before we play a much-improved Marlin team.”
Thorndale is 6-2 on the season with losses to Bremond and Holland. The latter is the seventh ranked team in Class 2A-I and has yet to lose a game this season.
