The Thorndale High School boys basketball team placed fourth in their first tournament of the season in Salado.
“The tournament went great,” said John Kovar, THS boy’s head basketball coach. “We played big schools and competed pretty well.”
Thorndale beat Flour Bluff of Corpus Christi 68-60, Cameron 71-40 and Weiss of Pflugerville 58-54. They lost 54-49 to Gatesville.
Sam Reaves averaged 23 points in the tournament. Kolby Neumeyer was also a key scorer for the ‘Dawgs with an average of 9.5 points per game.
“We are struggling to adjust to the speed of the varsity game,” Kovar said. “But that’s easy to understand. We’ll catch up with experience.”
Earlier in the week, the Bulldogs won 60-48 at home against the Smith-ville Tigers. Reaves led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Michael Herzog, and Jagger Rubio both had 11 points each, and Neumeyer had seven.
The Bulldogs play at Calvert on Tuesday night after press time. They will host their own tournament Thursday and Saturday. THS will play Gateway College Preparatory (Georgetown) 10 a.m., Thursday.
