THORNDALE—The Thorndale Bulldogs second scrimmage of the 2018 season at home established sophomore Cayden Nicholson as the starting quarterback.

The 5-foot-9, sophomore Nicholson threw two touchdown passes and managed the huddle well, according to Scott Hawkins, the Bulldogs head coach and athletic director.

“We executed our offense a little better and played better defense,” said Hawkins, who is entering his fourth season.

Thorndale hosted the Granger Lions, a 2A Division II team that was picked to finish third in district 13-2A-II, that only lost five seniors from their 2017 season.

The ‘Dawgs improved from their first scrimmage against Centerville, according to Hawkins.

“The tough part now lies in having a week off before playing in week two of the season,” Hawkins said, referring to the season opener being their bye week. Thorndale’s 2018 season will include two open weeks on their schedule.

The extra open week is a result of Chilton removing their game with the Bulldogs during the first week of the season. This late cancellation left Hawkins with little time to find a replacement game before the start of district play.

“It changes a lot of things,” said Hawkins. “We only have three games to get ready for district instead of four.”

Thorndale will start their season on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m.at Bulldog Stadium, where they will host the Bremond Tigers. The Tigers are picked first in district 13-2A Division II and ranked eighth overall in their classification in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine.

Thorndale will begin district play on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. against Rosebud-Lott at Cougar Stadium in Rosebud.
