Thorndale’s 2019 season opened with an explosive 64-6 win over Class 3A Florence on Friday night.
The Bulldogs’s Slot-T offense powered through the Florence defensive line in the first half with four touchdowns in the first quarter and another in the second.
THS even incorporated their rare-passing game with quarterback Cayden Nicholson throwing a 53-yard bomb to receiver Michael Herzog late in the first quarter. Nicholson also found Colton Ray open for a 50-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter. At halftime, Thorndale led 51-6.
During the second half, the maroon-and-gold scored twice more in the third with a 10-yard run by Herzog and another 10-yarder by running back Cain Brymer. Thorndale won the game 64-6.
Herzog led the Bulldogs with 132-yards on seven carries and one catch for 53 yards for a combined total of three touchdowns.
THS head football coach Scott Hawkins gave credit to the young Buffalo team, who had four starters returning on both sides of the ball.
“Florence is still adapting to their new offense and defense,” Hawkins said. “They’ll get better as the year goes on.”
He also discussed how while his team is happy, they’re already focusing on this Friday’s game in Bremond.
“We only try to celebrate in the moment so we can begin preparing our minds for the next opponent.” He said.
Although the Tigers, who won three straight state championships from 2014-2016, were out of the playoffs after the first round last season, Bremond is slated to be back amongst the top 2A schools with nine starters returning on offense and nine back on defense.
The Tigers are coming off a 40-28 win over Norman-gee.
Kickoff is at 7:30p.m. in Bremond.
