BASTROP—Thorndale’s 2022 season came to an end this past Thursday at Bastrop’s Memorial Stadium, where they lost to Ganado, 66-12.

GHS came out firing immediately, with three unanswered touchdowns in the opening quarter to build an ideal lead, 21-0. With another Ganado touchdown mid-way through the second quarter, the score at halftime was 28-0.

Thorndale attempted to brush away at the GHS lead in the third, with a one-yard TD run by Coy Stutts at the 5:39 mark and a 59-yard touchdown pass from Stutts to receiver Clason Beasley with less than two minutes to play in the third, but Ganado never spent that much time away form their end zone, piling up 16 more points to lead 44-12 at the close of the quarter.

In the fourth, GHS picked up a safety and score three more times to end the Bulldogs’ season, 66-12.

Team leaders for Thorndale were Beasley, who had six receptions for 116 yards. Stutts was 13 of 26 with 164 yards and one touchdown. Noah Crabtree was the team’s leading rusher with 48 yards on 13 carries.

Ganado is set to face district rival Refugio in the Region IV semifinals later this week in San Antonio.

SEASON— The Bulldogs started their season o ff h ot. E ven t hough t hey l ost t o top-ranked Lexington 35-33 in their 2022 opener, they bounced back with an 36-34 overtime win over Granger, who is still in the post-season as of press time. They went on to win another three straight over Riesel, Iola and Schulenburg in their district debut. They hit a tiny rough patch on Friday, Sept. 30, against eventual district winner Flatonia, losing 37-13. However, they secured a second place finish in District 13-2A-I with four consecutive victories over Weimar, Thrall, Hearne and perennial power Holland, who they beat in a close one 56-54. Going into the post-season, they were matched up against Johnson City in the first round. The Eagles, who finished third in District 14-2A-I, put up a fight in their bi-district game on Thursday, Nov. 10, erasing a 21-7 Thorndale lead in the third quarter before the Bulldogs punched back and won, 41-30.

Stutts ends the year with 2,323 yards and 24 touchdown passes. The THS senior was also the team’s leading rusher with 1,149 yards on 221 carries. Beasley was Thorndale’s top receiver, earning 1,117 yards on 52 receptions and averaging 21.5 yards per catch. THS sophomore Jayden Clawson was behind him with 877 yards on 34 catches. He racked up 25.8 yards per catch. For game stats, see page 2B.
