The Thorndale Bulldogs won their own tournament this past weekend behind the scoring of point guard Sam Reaves.

“The tournament was full of evenly talented teams,” said John Kovar, THS boy’s head basketball coach. “Every team had at least one loss and it made for great games.”

In their first game, the Bulldogs defeated Georgetown’s Gateway College Prep 60-56.

Reaves scored 23 points. He averaged 25.3 points every game this season. His teammate Kolby Neumeyer had 13. Ty Kovar and Evan Ivy both had nine points.

Thorndale lost 51-47 to Caldwell in their second game. Reaves scored 15 points, while Neumeyer and Ivy had eight and seven.

Thorndale bounced back to defeat Marble Falls Faith Academy 71-42. Reaves scored 30. Neumeyer and Michael Herzog both had 14 points. The Bulldogs ended their tournament with a 61-38 win over Smithville.

Both Thorndale and Gateway amassed a 4-1 record in tournament play, but the Gators were edged out of the championship title because of their loss to Thorndale earlier.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, THS beat Calvert 68-66. Reaves had 30, and Ivy and Neumeyer each had nine. Kovar also had eight.

“We are slowly getting better,” Kovar said. “We’re also learning to play the style of basketball that will make us successful this season.”

The Bulldogs played in Weimar on Tuesday after press time, and will host the Rockdale Tigers at 5 p.m. on Friday for their final pre-district game, and will also host their first district game against rival Thrall on Tuesday, Dec. 18 for a 7:45 p.m. tipoff.
