Thorndale 2-1 after first three district games; next up: Holland
WEIMAR—Friday night started pretty shaky for the Bulldogs against the Weimar Wildcats, a team with a new coach that Texas Football magazine picked to finish last in District 13-2A-I.
WHS took an early lead midway through the first quarter when Zach Norrell got away from Bulldog defenders for a 26-yard touchdown run. Two minutes later, Weimar’s 6-0 advantage became a thing of the past, as Thorndale’s Aiden McRae put points on the scoreboard for the ’Dawgs with a 30-yard sprint. A successful extra point made by Raymond Avalos got THS up 7-6 at the close of the first.
After their first touchdown, the Bulldogs ran with the lead and never looked back. Coy Stutts scored on a four-yard run a little over half-way through the second to make it, 14-6.
Thorndale went into halftime up 21-6 when Clason Beasley got his ninth TD of the year on a 30-yard pass from Stutts with three seconds left to play in the first half.
More of the same occurred in the third quarter, as Beasley scored another touchdown thanks to a pass from Stutts a little more than a minute into the second half. Noah Crabtree also racked up some points for the Bulldogs later in the third on a 21-yard run at the 4:07 mark. WHS had a bit of a scoring streak early in the fourth quarter, with three unanswered touchdowns in a span of three minutes and 48 seconds, but it wasn’t quite enough. Thorndale went on to win 34-26 and improve their district record to 2-1 and 5-2 overall on the season.
STATS— For the fifth straight week, Beasley and sophomore Jayden Clawson were the team’s top receivers. Beasley led with nine catches for 119 yards, while Clawson racked up 102 yards on six different plays.
Stutts was 14 of 23 with 212 passing yards and two touchdowns. The THS junior is 70 of 133 for the season with 1,453 yards, 15 touchdowns and four interceptions through seven games.
THIS WEEK— Similar to their matchup with Flatonia a week before, the Bulldogs will be tested this Friday when they host Holland.
A district favorite for much of the past decade, the Hornets are perceived as an underdog this season. HHS has a younger roster with only five players back on offense and six returning on the opposite side of is undefeated in district play following their first two games, beating Weimar 49-7 and Thrall, 39-0. The Hornets share a similar opponent with the Bulldogs. HHS lost to Granger on Friday, Sept. 9, 28-0. THS beat the Lions a week before, 36-34 in double-overtime.
