GIDDINGS—With 13.4 seconds left in Milano’s regional quarterfinal matchup with seventh-ranked Flatonia, it seemed liked anything could happen, especially since the Bulldogs had cut the Eagle lead from 10 down to 2 in the final quarter.
Four-year starter Layne Telg helped seal the deal for the Eagles, hitting two free throws to give his team a four-point lead, making it a two-possession game and ultimately helping MHS land their first trip to the regional tourney since 2013.
Telg’s classmate Weston Avrett was also instrumental in the fourth, scoring six of the teams eight points that quarter. Other top performers were Ethan Gordon, who led the team with 16 while Jayce Todd had 15. Telg ended the evening with 12.
REGIONALS—MHS will compete in the regional tournament at San Marcos High School later this week. They will face Falls City at 6 p.m. Friday.
Ticket information will be posted on The Rockdale Reporter’s Facebook page.
LAST WEEK—Last Friday in Caldwell, the Eagles started on fire, scoring 17 points before Snook scored. The Eagles went on to win 63-48, never leading by less than double-digits after scoring their first 10 points.
Milano’s one-three-one zone defense put a halt to any Blue Jays wanting to drive into the paint during the first half, forcing them to bank on the three-pointer, which wasn’t too reliable.
Snook eventually got points on the board in the first quarter, but the Eagles led 31-12 at the half, thanks to 12 points from Todd and 7 from Avrett, who rested for the final four minutes. Telg had another hot night, scoring
15 in the third.
Todd led with 22, while Telg had 19. Avrett had 9 and fellow starter Bryson Richards scored 5. Gael Alcala and Mykal Hutson each earned 3, while post Greg Storey put up 2 points. Gordon was scoreless but also a key contributor on both sides of the ball.
MHS head coach Lee Essman also complimented the support of the Milano community in his interview with College Station’s KAGS after the game.
“You know when you start winning, the fans come out of the woodworks, it seems like that sometimes,” he told reporter Ben Peck. “But the town of Milano, they support these boys.”
“We just want to live up to that support and be the best we can,” he added.
