On Monday night, Rockdale High School held “Meet the Tigers,” the district’s annual event to celebrate the beginning of the school year with an opportunity for the community to meet all the coaches, sponsors and students involved in fall athletics.
Although the event featured music from the Big Blue Band from Tigerland, dance routines from the Golden Girls and chants from the RHS cheerleaders, one of the biggest parts of the event, the cake auction was all done online via the Rockdale Tiger Athletics page on Facebook.
“It’s not the same without John Fisher doing the auction,” said one event attendee. “Although it did end a lot sooner, it just didn’t have the same level of camaraderie.”e.”
Last year’s “Meet the Tigers” was done entirely online.
TIGERS—After more than a week of practice, second-year head coach Jacob Campsey likes the way his team has started off the 2021 season.
“There hasn’t been hardly any time at all where you could look and say ‘man, there’s a lull here,” Campsey told KRXT earlier this week. “There’s obviously execution mistakes and you expect that with so many people leaving and filling in spots. But man, if that effort stays where it’s been at, we’re going to be just fine.”
The Tigers have a lot of fresh faces emerging particularly from their sophomore class but still have senior Kobe Mitchell, who is starting his fourth season as a varsity football player and stepped up last season for starting quarterback Jace Robinson, who was injured in week one of 2020 and helped lead RHS to the playoffs for the ninth straight season.
SCRIMMAGE—The Tigers head to Jarrell Friday for their first scrimmage of 2021.
The Cougars are coming off a 1-9 season and are in the midst of growing pains starting off their second year as a Class 4A high school.
They do have experience with 15 starters returning, including running back D.J. Warren, who rushed for more than 1,200 yards last year.
Scrimmaging starts at 5:30 p.m. for the junior varsity and 7 p.m. for the varsity.
MILANO—Although the Milano Eagle football team doesn’t play Friday, they will have to wake up fairly early Saturday morning to make the 106-mile trip to Cypress Christian School for their first scrimmage of the season.
Game time is 10 a.m.
THORNDALE—Of the three schools The Reporter covers, the Thorndale Bulldogs are the only team staying home this week when they host Austin’s Hyde Park Baptist School Friday for their first scrimmage of the season.
Play starts 6 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
