Milano faces a tough road immediately when they face Grapeland on Friday at Pruitt Field.

The Sandies are the fifth-ranked team in Class 2A, Division in Texas Football Magazine.

New Milano quarterback Noah Benavidez and running backs Danny Cloud, Marquise Jones and receiver Drew Demeritt will have to push past the Sandie defense that has seven returning members including 6’2”, 185-pound Cooper Sheridan. Sheridan had 131 tackles and nine sacks in his sophomore season.

MHS defensive linemen Darius West and Alec Hernandez are tasked with getting to Grapeland quarterback B.J. Lamb. Lamb is a former receiver that had 927 receiving yards last year and is expected to utilize his athleticism this upcoming season.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

THORNDALE—The Thorndale Bulldogs played in their final scrimmage on Friday evening in Granger.

“To be honest, we didn’t improve a whole lot on offense,” said Scott Hawkins, THS head football coach and athletic director. “But I thought our defense did a better job of running to the ball.”

Although not impressed with his offense, Hawkins said he was confident in the force behind his Slot-T offense.

“I believe we have six solid running backs that I can count on,” He said. “Our main objective is to find five offensive linemen that can make this offense move.”

FLORENCE—On Friday evening, THS takes on Florence in their first contest of the year.

The Buffaloes are picked fifth out of five teams in District 8-3A, Division II in Texas Football and only have four starters on each side of the ball this season.

The Buffs are led by running back Jakobi Lewis, who averaged nine-yards per carry last season.

“Florence is huge up front,” Hawkins said. “This is a game we won’t be able to take lightly.”

“Like us, they have some dangerous runners in the backfield. We’ll have to use our quickness on defense and our misdirection on offense.”

Kickoff is at 7:30p.m.
