Old rivals will collide on Friday night as RHS faces off against the Taylor Ducks at Tiger Stadium.
“Taylor is a 4A school, so they’ll probably have more depth than us,” RHS Head Coach Jacob Campsey said. “They run a similar offense as La Grange did, so defensively we need to be locked in on third downs and get them off the field. On offense, we need to be more consistent and efficient on each drive.”
ROCKDALE—RHS is coming off a dominant win beating the La Grange Leopards last week 40-14. However, a new face will be taking the realm at quarterback. With Jace Robinson going down with a broken leg last week, Junior Kobe Mitchell will be making his first career start for the Tigers.
“I’m feeling confident,” Mitchell said. “Not only confident in myself but extremely confident in my teammates also. To be the quarterback for the Rockdale Tigers means a lot. It’s one of the best feelings in the world.”
Campsey says the team has a lot of faith in Mitchell.
“Kobe’s pretty dynamic with the ball in his hands and he can handle our offense,” Campsey said. “He did such a good job against La Grange I believe it gave everyone around him confidence.”
The Tiger defense had an outstanding turnout against La Grange only allowing 14 points and forcing four turnovers.
The Tiger linebackers had a great showing with Drayton Castaneda, Chase Mayfield and Enrique Rivera all making an impact on the game. They will need to have another great showing to stop the strong running attack of Taylor.
Players to watch: The Tiger offense will still be high powered as running back Cam’ron Valdez is coming off an outstanding performance recording 132 yards and three touchdowns against La Grange.
Wide Receiver Kesean Raven showed his versatility on offense totaling 89 total yards, one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown.
TAYLOR—The Taylor Ducks will be looking to earn their first win of the season on Friday after a tough 26-21 loss against the Robinson Rockets. The offense started off strong but only registered 38 total yards in the second half.
Although the Duck defense played well against the pass, they struggled against the run allowing 216 yards against Robinson.
Players to watch: Sophomore quarterback Bryson Bass will present a duelthreat challenge for the Tiger defense. He ran all over Robinson going for 139 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns. Bass showed his explosiveness by ripping runs of 58 and 47 yards.
Junior Ste’Kevion Johnson proved himself as a threat scoring an 80-yard kick return touchdown to go along with 25 rush yards on four carries.
On defense, middle linebacker Moses Buzan was a force with 14 total tackles in the Duck’s first game.
