Ihad an epic fail last week by reporting Jonathan Fuller placed second at the state track meet. It’s a long story but I’m so sad I did that and I hope it did not diminish his accomplishment of making it to the state meet as a freshman.

What Fuller did is an achievement not many can put on their resume. Tiger Nation should look forward to watching this young student athlete run and represent the Blue & Gold for the next three years (no pressure Jon).

Lee Nichols who also bleeds Blue & Gold and made the paper last week for his running ability as a Tiger shared with our Editor Kyle Cooke to “save the cutline and paste it in next year, Jon will probably be collecting silver medals by then.”

My apologies to Jonathan and his family. By the way, Jon is the ninth fastest kid in the state. —ka— I went into the vault at The Reporter office last week and found out some interesting fun facts.

Did you know RISD teacher Kaitlyn Brinkley coached soccer back in 2020?

Also making the sports headlines in 2020 was Longhorn, overachiever and all around good dude Devon Whitsel for his athletic skills on the tennis court.

Ten years ago, the Tigers were ranked 10th in a preseason poll by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

The school across the river was ranked number one in the state, looking for yet another state championship. The Tigers were also wearing blue helmets I think for the very first time.

In 2000, Coach Casey Creaghan was starting his eighth season as head football coach. Volleyball Coach Melissa Counihan had 42 spikers coming out to play volleyball.

Back in 1980, Kathie Bassler won the singles division in The Frontier Days Tennis Tournament.

Also in 1980, the RISD school board approved a five-year plan that included a new all-weather track. This track would be ready for the 1982-83 school year at a cost of $70,000.

1980 was a sad year for the community, Head Football Coach Fred Johnson who led Rockdale to a state championship in 1976 was resigning and would move to Midlothian. In total 14 coaches resigned including one of our favorite people Coach June West, tennis coach Sam White and Coach Don Carter who along with his wife Karen started the FCA chapter that still exists today.
