The RHS cross country team hit the ground running as they competed in their first meet of the season at the Rockdale Invitational. The races took place early Friday morning in the fields of the Rockdale Country Club.

The boys enter the season with high expectations, as one of their goals for this season is to make a run at the district championship. The girls’ team is back in competition after not having a team for the last few years. They will be looking to place at the district meet this year.

The girls’ race took place around 8 a.m. Instead of the normal cross-country format, the Rockdale Invitational was a relay where each runner had to run a one-mile lap. Since the girls’ team only has six participants, multiple runners were placed on the second and third legs of the race.

Taytum Young ran the first leg. Tatiana Olivares and Mariana Castillo ran the second leg. Alize Llanes and Katia Hernandez ran third leg and Jesenia Navarro ran last leg for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Tigers placed fifth with a time of 26:48:00.

The boys’ race began around 10 a.m. Like the girls’ race, the boys also had a relay style race where each runner was required to run a lap. However, the laps for the boys was a mile and a half. Since the boys had eight participants, they were able to have two teams compete.

The first team consisted of Chris Perez, Cristo Hernandez, Yovanney Delgadillo and Jesus Bocanegra. The team finished in second place behind McGregor with a time of 32:37:00.

The second team consisted of Jose Tenorio, Diego Garza, Albert Silva and Issac Fuentes. The team finished 8th with a time of 38:04:00

RHS Head Coach Cheryl Meuth praised the team for their efforts.

“I was so excited for their first meet and the work they put in,” Meuth said. “The girls team medaled, which hasn’t happened in a few years. The boys came in second place overall and beat out some super competitive teams. I couldn’t be happier with their season start.”

The next meet for the Tigers will be the Tri Meet with Cameron and Milano on Sept. 19 at Cameron High School.
