The Rockdale Tigers played in their third scrimmage of the season on Friday night at home against Caldwell.
“For the most part, I thought we did things well,” said John Hooser, Rockdale High School head baseball coach. “It was a first outing for our basketball players and some of our pitchers and they looked good.
“There’s definitely a lot of room for improvement. We did really well in at-bats where our hitters had two strikes on them, but we would end up with two strikes because we were more defensive than aggressive at the plate,” he said. “We watched good pitches go by. But besides that and needing to clean up some things on defense, it was a good night.”
The Caldwell scrimmage was also pitcher Zac Davis’ first outing of the year. Davis led Rockdale on the mound last year with 29 strikeouts in 25.2 innings and is signed to play at Centenary College following graduation.
“Zac looked really good out there,” Hooser said. “He just stayed with the fastball and change-up and it’ll take some time before he’s in full form.
“But he’s got a presence on the mound and he’s very coachable. I think he’ll be just fine.”
RHS is scheduled to play a home double-header with Thorndale at noon and Round Top-Carmine at 5 p.m. on Saturday, but with the bad weather schedule for most of the week, the games may be canceled.
“The weather’s really unfortunate because it’s hard to simulate real game situations in practice, Hooser said. “We need game time experience.”
If the doubleheader is canceled, Rockdale plays their next game against Buffalo Tuesday at home.
