At the district 19-3A cross country meet in Cameron, many Rockdale runners came close to qualifying for the regional meet.

“We have a young varsity team,” said Cheryl Darby, Rockdale ISD head cross country coach. “Cady (Barcak) did amazing for a freshman on varsity.”

Barcak was in twelveth place on the course but out ran Uridian Reyes of McGregor near the finish line to get eleventh place, according to Darby.

“She’s been working hard on her kick at the end, so I was very pleased with her finish,” Darby said.

Barcak led the Lady Tigers with a time of 13:50.4. Her eleventh place finish was nine seconds short of advancing to regionals. She came in behind Danielle Swegle of Little River Academy, who clocked in at 13:41.4.

Six other Lady Tigers ran at the district meet. They were: 20. Marina Costilla, 14:29.5; 21. Tasha San Miguel, 14:36.3; 23. Ivanna Luna, 14:38.0; 37. Alize Llanas, 15:32.4; 44. Jesenia Navarro, 16:20.0; and 48. Leigh Hollan, 17:30.0.

Six members of the boys cross country team competed in the 5,000 meters race. The top finisher was Isaac Fuentes, who came in nineteenth with a time of 19:21.7.

Other finishers were: 28. Alberto Torres, 20:32.0; 31. Albert Silva, 20:49.7; 34. A.J. Hicks, 21:04.9; 40. Brian Bell, 23:24.4 and 42. Layne Rash, 23:53.0.

In the junior varsity race, three Lady Tigers placed in the top 20:

11. Vivian Montelongo, 17:07.2; 12. Zoe Laurence, 17:12 and 19. Lilliana Torres, 18:33.6.

“We didn’t hit our goal as a team, but I’m still very proud of their progress from last year to this year.” Said Darby, finishing her second season as Rock-dale head coach. “We are headed in the right direction.”
