The Rockdale High School relay teams faced-off with Cameron once more before the upcoming district track meet and trailed by seconds at the Bumblebee Relays in Little River-Academy last Thursday.
“Everybody ran well and made good times on the track,” said Lewis Edmon-son, Rockdale High School head boys track coach. “We made some changes to our teams and did a lot of fine tuning right before district.”
In the sprint relay, the race came down to the final stretch with Cameron’s senior anchor Davion Bynaum beating sophomore Kesean Raven to give the Yoemen the victory. The Tigers improved their time from 43.65 to 42.57 and now have the second fastest time in the region behind Cameron, who ran a 42.37 in the same race.
In the four-by-two, the race came down to the final stretch with Bynaum and Qua’Shawn Crawford. Cameron won with a time of 1:29.75 to beat the Tigers 1:30.27. The Tigers also improved their race time and hold the second fastest time in the region behind Cameron as well.
Earlier in the day, Ty Mayberry finished second in the shot put with a 44-10 and Albert Silva was also second in the 800-meter run with a 2:14.54.
Later on, Cam’Ron Valdez won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 41.38 and Will Storey won the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.24, the second fastest time in class 3A behind Whitewright’s Xavier Dunlap, who holds the top time of 22.02. This was Storey’s first time running the 200 this season after Edmonson decided to withdraw him from the 100-meter dash, a race that comes right before the four-by-two relay.
The Tigers will host the District 19-3A meet on Wednesday and Thursday at the new Tiger Stadium.
“We haven’t changed anything this past week,” Edmonson said. “Our guys know it’s execution season and that we just have to stick to the script and do our part.
“I have a good feeling we’ll be all right. We just have to run our races from start-to-finish.”
LADY TIGERS—The Rockdale girls track team also had four top finishers in their final meet before district.
In the field events, Andrea Salazar placed second in the discus with a throw of 99-4. Freshman Ivanna Luna placed third with a time of 2:39.99 in the 800-meter and sophomore Mackenzie Musto placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.27.
In the mile, Luna placed second with a time of 6:00.52 and Tasha San Miguel placed fourth right behind her with a time of 6:15.12.
