Two Rockdale High School doubles teams won their respective divisions this past week at the District 19-3A tennis tournament in Franklin to earn a spot at the Region III tourney.
After racing through their opponents 6-0,6-0 and 6-1,6-0 on the first day, 2018 mixed doubles state champions Reyna Gonzalez and Devon Whitsel won their finals match over a Little River-Academy team 6-2, 6-1.
Whitsel and Gonzalez are 19-1 on the season and haven’t lost a match since Friday, Feb. 8.
The girls doubles team of Payton Miller and Autumn Montelongo faced a much different path to the regional tourney. On the first day, the duo took down Franklin and Academy in matches that both went to a third set.
On Wednesday, they went to Cameron to face a Lady Yoe team and played a match that lasted more than three hours with two of the three sets coming down to a seven-point tiebreaker that resulted in Miller and Montelongo winning 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-6 (8-6) to advance to the finals.
They won the championship 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 last Thursday over Academy for a trip to regionals.
The Region III tennis tournament will be Wednesday, April 17-18 at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.
