Milano struggled early Friday night on their home field against 6-1 Granger, who currently holds third place halfway through the District 13-2A-II race.
The Lions attacked immediately, scoring on a fumble recovery to take a 7-0 lead and got to the end zone twice more in the opening quarter to take a 21-0 lead.
Although GHS improved their lead to 35-0 in the second with two more rushing touchdowns to widen the gap, junior Ethan Gordon put up Milano’s first and only points of the night with a two-yard touchdown in the second. Alejandro Ruelas’ extra point kick changed the score to 35-7, which ended up being the final score since neither team went on to score in the second half.
Gordon was the leading rusher for the Eagles with 67 yards on 16 carries. Ruelas, a freshman, had 10 carries for 42 yards. Behind the center, MHS quarterback Jayce Todd was 3 of 10 with 41 passing yards. Nick Grimes was Todd’s main target with two catches for 24 yards and Gordon had one catch for 17 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Gordon led MHS with nine tackles while Grimes had six. Gabe Sanders was also a top performer with five solo tackles.
THIS WEEK—The Eagles have a bye Friday and, as of press time, are sitting just outside of the playoff bubble in fifth place in District 13-2A-II.
The Eagles have a tough road ahead in their final three games. On Oct. 22, they face 2-1 Iola who beat Snook in their district opener 7-6, before falling to 13-2A-II leader Somerville 14-13.
The Bulldogs also beat Bartlett 20-12, a team MHS defeated 33-16 in their second district contest.
After being on the road in Iola, the Eagles will take on Burton, who is tied with Somerville for first and had it’s only loss of the season to Shiner 43-0, Texas Football Magazine’s second-ranked team in Class 2A-I.
Their third and final opponent in the remainder of their district slate is Snook, a team who started the season ranked among the top 25 Class 2A-II schools but is winless through their two district games with the loss to Iola and a 34-8 loss to Burton.
