On Friday night, the Milano Eagles escaped the Houston suburbs victorious with a 30-29 win over the Cypress Christian Warriors, wrapping up their pre-district portion of their schedule undefeated.

MHS scored first as senior Josh Millar punched in his 12th touchdown of the season on a fiveyard run. Gael Alcala’s extra point got the Eagles up 7-0 at the close of the first.

The Warriors answered back in the second with a five-yard TD run of their own by quarterback Maxwell Landrum. MHS sophomore Andres Ruelas blocked the extra point, which was returned by Alcala, putting Milano up 9-6. The Eagles increased their lead when Gabe Sanders r eturned t he f ollowing k ickoff f or a n 85-yard TD. MHS led 16-7 at halftime.

In the third, both teams went back and forth with Landrum throwing a 25-yard touchdown pass to make it, 16-14. Millar stretched the Milano lead with a 68-yard TD run, but the quarter ended with the Eagles leading 23-20 after Landrum threw another touchdown pass.

Early in the fourth, Milano went up 30-20 when Ruelas scored on a 4-yard run.

However, the game was anything but over as Cypress cut the MHS lead to seven with a 27-yard field goal. Then CCS scored once more on a TD pass by Landrum. The Eagles ultimately prevailed as Millar prevented the Warriors from winning the game after intercepting Landrum’s two-point conversion pass, securing a Milano victory.

STATS— Ruelas was the team leader in rushing yards with 155 on 15 carries while Millar racked up 132 yards on nine runs. The MHS senior has a total of 580 yards through four games played and Ruelas has compiled 512 yards in that same time frame.

Alcala was the team’s top defender with 13 total tackles while Sanders ended the night with 11.

THIS WEEK— While other team’s in District 13-2A-II begin district play this week, the Eagles get to rest before traveling to Bartlett on Friday, Oct. 7.

SEASON— Prior to this past Friday’s game that came down to the wire, the Eagles dominated in their first three contests in which they beat their opponents by a combined score of 13520.

On Aug. 26, they took down Waco Reicher on the road, 41-7. Their following game with Huntsville’s Alpha Omega was canceled due to inclement weather, but the Eagles hardly missed a beat as they grabbed another 41-7 road victory on Sept. 9, when they faced Temple’s Central Christian School.

On Sept. 16, they took on Meridian and beat the Yellowjackets, 51-6, in a game that Millar scored five touchdowns.
