MILANO—MHS football ran into some tough luck on Friday evening when they took on undefeated Burton at Pruitt Field, falling to the Panthers 42-3.
The Eagles got an early lead when kicker Irvin Juarez made a 27-yard field goal a little over halfway through the first quarter. After that, it was all Burton with six unanswered touchdowns including three from Tyrone Gilmon.
Top performers for the Eagles were Ethan Gordon, who had 16 carries for 64 yards and Alan Maldonado, who concluded the evening with six carries for 46 yards.
On defense, Josh Millar led the Eagles with 12 tackles while Edison Bui had nine.
SNOOK—For the Eagles, Friday’s district finale will be a game to see who goes on to the playoffs and who goes home.
Originally picked to win District 13-2A-II by Texas Football magazine, the Blue Jays have struggled this season.
They lost to Iola 7-6 in their district opener, a team the Eagles defeated 35-22.
However, SHS defeated Somerville, a team Milano lost to and are coming off a 21-14 loss to district front-runner Granger.
They have a new coach in Boone Patterson, but are led by seasoned quarterback Garrett Lero.
A multi-sport athlete for the Blue Jays, Lero had 1,446 passing yards and 890 rushing yards with 26 touchdowns in 2020 and has been the focal point for Snook once again in 2021.
PLAYOFFS—Following Milano’s loss to Burton, it was announced via Texas Football’s website that the Panthers had to forfeit all of their games besides their contest with Milanodue playing an ineligible player in their first eight games and now have a district record of 1-4 instead of 5-0. As a result, Milano now sits in fourth with the tiebreaker over Iola while Bartlett and Burton sit in sixth and seventh.
Unless the Panthers, who were undefeated before it was discovered that they broke a rule, lose to Iola, the 2-4 Eagles have to beat Snook in order to advance to the playoffs.
If the Eagles lose and Burton wins, both teams will end district play with a record of 2-4, and Burton will have the tiebreaker over Milano and get the final playoff spot in District 13-2A-II.
