Milano’s undefeated streak came to an end on Friday, when the Eagles couldn’t overcome a late second quarter surge by Bremond, losing 36-21.
The Tigers, who were coming off two hard-fought losses to ranked district opponents Chilton and Granger, came out firing. Bremond’s Braylen Wortham scored on the team’s first series with a 21-yard run, putting them up, 8-0.
Milano answered back, pushing their way down the field and successfully converting two fourth downs before Ethan Gordon scored on a three-yard push. Gael Alcala’s extra point made the score, 8-7.
Bremond stayed ahead on their next drive when Wortham handed the ball off to Bobby Drake for a fiveyard TD. BHS led 14-7 after being unable to convert the extra point.
Although Milano ended up having to punt on their next drive, Ty Magee helped his team seek redemption after their scoreless series. The MHS sophomore linebacker picked off a pass that he returned for a 30-yard TD. With another extra point made by Alcala, the Tigers and the Eagles were tied at 14 with 5:49 left to play in the half.
However, favor tilted towards Bremond for the remainder of the half. After starting with the ball in an ideal location at the Milano 18-yard line, Bremond pushed the ball even further up the field to the one-yard line. Facing a fourth-andone situation, Wortham got the ball across the goal line with about three minutes left in the second.
The Tigers added to their lead before the quarter ended when Wortham united with Koben Zan for a 37-yard touchdown pass. At halftime, Bremond led 28-14.
Milano cut the lead to seven during the third when sophomore Andres Ruelas scored on a 25-yard run. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that deficit was brought from seven to 15 points when Drake got away for a 68-yard run later in the fourth. With a two-point conver sion r un by Wortham, Bremond led 36-21, which was the game’s final score.
STATS— Ruelas led the team in rushing yards with 167 on 21 carries. Gordon led the team on defense with seven tackles while Austin McGowin had six.
THIS WEEK— The Eagles are 2-1 in district play but have a rough schedule a head of them for their final two district contests.
This Friday, they take on Granger, Texas Football magazine’s 10th-ranked team in Class 2A-II.
GHS is led by running back D. J. McClelland, who has 1,092 yards in seven games. The Lions beat Bremond without McClelland for most of the game 31-28, on Friday, Oct. 14. The Lions are c oming o ff a 3 4-19 loss to Chilton, the fifth-ranked team in the classification, that Milano is scheduled to face on Nov. 4 in their district finale.
Game time between the two schools is set for 7 p.m. at Milano’s Pruitt Field.
