In Friday night’s district opener, the Eagles started off the evening going head-to-head with visiting Somerville.

The Yeguas got their first touchdown on a 70-yard run, only for MHS sophomore Alan Maldonado to answer back on a goal line TD to tie the game at seven at the close of the first quarter.

That balance was effected in the second quarter when the Yeguas scored three times. First, on a 53-yard pass from Johnny Legg to Gardner Shivers.

Then, SHS increased their lead to 21-7 when Legg connected with Verkobe Woodberry for a 64-yard TD pass.

Milano’s Maldonado scored on a 10-yard run but with the missed extra point, the Eagles trailed by eight.

Arvis Burns of Somerville made it 28-13 at halftime when he broke away for a 54-yard touchdown run.

The Burleson County team increased their lead to 21 when Legg scored the quarter’s only points.

The Eagles fought back in the fourth with three touchdowns from Maldonado, Ethan Gordon and Andres Ruelas but the Yeguas scored two more to take the game 49-34.

Ruelas led the Eagles in the backfield with a season high of 238 yards on 25 carries.
