MILANO - The Milano Eagles will test their wings in a scrimmage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 against the Owls of Anderson-Shiro.
Coach Chad Lagrone’s, picked fourth by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in District 13-2A (Div. 1), will see seven returning offensive starters and six defensive starters in this season’s campaign. The Eagles went 11-2 (4-1 in district) in 2017 and were a regional semifinalist in Division II play.
Quarterback Kathen Funburg moves under center from the running back position he occupied last year. Last year, he rushed for nearly 900 yards and accounted for 8 touchdowns for the Eagles.
Other players to watch include receivers Devonte Jones and Christian Thurman, along with tight end Arthur Soto. Noah Benavides will line up in the backfield for the Eagles.
Alec Hernandez, Luke Hollingsworth and Jake Turnage will open holes for the offense.
Leading the defense will be linemen Kevin Garcia and Ben King, along with linebackers Danny Cloud, Jeremy Reyes and Benavides.
Opener
Milano’s opener will be held Friday, Aug. 31 in Grapeland, versus the San-dies.
District 13-2A II picks, according to TF, include Hearne, Holland, Thorndale, Milano, Thrall, Marlin and Rosebud-Lott.
