Although the score doesn’t reflect it, the Milano Eagles football team played the 2017 state semi-finalist Burton Panthers close in their home debut, Friday, Sept. 7, losing 47-16.

After two touchdowns that put the Panthers ahead 14-0 in the first quarter, Eagles senior wide receiver Devonte Jones caught a pass from senior quarterback Kathen Funburg with nine seconds to go. This resulted in a 75-yard touchdown to end the quarter.

Milano went tit for tat with Burton throughout the remainder of the half.

The Panther’s junior running back Cash Callahan scored on a nine-yard run, but the Eagle defense stopped the two-point conversion. With one second left in the half, senior kicker Kevin Garcia made a 27-yard field goal, making the score 20-10 at halftime.

In the beginning of the third quarter, Caleb Harmel threw another touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jordan Mathis for 23 yards. Tristan Brantley made the extra point for a 27-10 score. The Eagles answered back three minutes later with a 51-yard bomb from Funburg to senior wide receiver Christian Thurman with 2:48 left in the third quarter. Garcia missed the extra point, making the score 27-16.

The Panthers scored once more in the third quarter. TCU-commit Dee Winters scored on a 27-yard run. Brantley missed the extra point. The quarter ended with the score 33-16.

The Panthers scored twice more in the fourth. Harmel scored on a 27-yard run, followed by a made extra point by Brantley with 10:21 left to play in the game. With 4:03 left in the game, freshman Jermaine Patterson scored on a six-yard run. Brantley made the extra point. The final score was 47-16.

Milano’s next contest will be on Friday, Sept. 14, against the Bremond Tigers. The Tigers were ranked eighth in classification 2A-DII by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, but are coming off a 34-8 loss to Thorndale this past week. Kickoff starts at 7:30 p.m. in Bremond.
