Milano came out on the losing end in Iola Friday night 14-3 in a hard-fought, defensive battle where each team held the other to less than 150 total offensive yards.

The first quarter was scoreless as the Eagles forced IHS coach Kerry Bamburg to punt twice and Milano quarterback Noah Benevides threw two interceptions.

Marcos Ruelas put the Eagles on the scoreboard with a 37-yard field goal, tie-ing his season high. The maroon-and-gold led 3-0 at halftime.

Milano held the lead for much of the third, but the Bulldogs capitalized on a blocked punt that put them at the 18-yard line. Two plays later, the Anderson County squad scored on an eight-yard pass from Blake Driver to Adam Crenshaw. Colton Boullion ran in the PAT to put Iola up 8-3 midway through the third.

Driver and Crenshaw linked up again early in the fourth when Crenshaw scored on a 67-yard touchdown. Driver’s attempt to convert failed, but the touchdown was enough to defeat Milano 14-3.

The Eagle defense held the Bulldog backfield to 25 yards on 27 carries and Iola lost yardage on seven of those. Danny Cloud led the team in tackles with eight including two for lost yardage. Darius West was also a top defender with six tackles, including one for loss and a blocked punt.

Taylor and Ethan Gordon both led the secondary, each getting an interception.
