The Milano Eagle offense put up 365 yards in a 38-13 victory over the Marlin Bulldogs Friday night at Pruitt Field.
“We were able to run the ball well and had some big plays in the passing game,” said Chad Lagrone, Milano High School head football coach.
Milano scored on an 11-yard pass from Kathen Funburg to Christian Thurman with seven seconds left to go in the first quarter. Kevin Garcia’s point-after-touchdown (PAT) put the Eagles ahead 7-0.
Milano hit their stride in the second quarter. Fun-burg found Jones open for an 82-yard pass to put the Eagles on the board at the beginning of the quarter. Funburg threw another touchdown pass to Thurman with less than a minute in the half for 33 yards. Garcia made both PAT’s as well as a field goal at the end of the half to put the Eagles up 24-0 at half time.
“Christian Thurman and Devonte Jones made some plays for us before the half,” Lagrone said.
Milano added to their lead in the third quarter with Thurman’s third touchdown of the game on a seven-yard run midway through the quarter. Garcia made the PAT to make the score 31-0. Near the end of the quarter, Funburg crossed the goal line for the first time that evening on a 21-yard run. Garcia made the PAT to put the Eagles up 38-0, going into the final quarter.
With many of their starters out of the game, the Eagles went scoreless in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored twice. First, on a 15-yard pass thrown from Braylen Fisher to La’Zarion Coleman early in the quarter. Kicker Gabriel Pena made the PAT. Marlin’s second touchdown came with a little less than six minutes left to play when LaTravious Johnson scored on one of his two carries of the evening. The Bulldog’s two-point conversion failed. The final score was 38-13.
In their second district win, Funburg threw for 144 yards on four complete passes. The senior quarterback also rushed for 108 of Milano’s 197 yards. Middle linebacker Danny Cloud was a leader for the Eagle defense with 10 tackles and one forced fumble.
Multiple underclassmen for the Eagles got a chance to play in Friday evening’s game. Sophomores Marquise Jones and Drew Demeritt both ran for 11 yards against the Bulldogs, and freshmen Nick Grimes had two carries in the Milano backfield.
Rosebud-Lott – With a 2-2 record and on the fringe of clinching a playoff spot, Lagrone and his squad are facing a team in the same position.
The Cougars are coming off a 19-14 loss to Thrall this past Friday. The Cougars are an older team with eight returning starters on offense and seven on defense. Running backs Ethan Easley and JaQuorian Johnson get most of the handoffs from quarterback Demetrio Castillo.
A Milano loss to Rosebud-Lott would give the Cougars the tiebreaker over the Eagles for the final spot for the state playoffs.
“The playoffs are on the line,” Lagrone said. “We need to win this one.”
Kickoff begins at 7:30 p.m. in Rosebud-Lott on Friday.
