On Friday, the Milano Eagle football team was back in action after torrential rain fall k ept M HS o ff t he fi eld the week before.
That being said, the Eagles were anything but rusty, taking down Temple’s Central Texas Christian School, 41-7.
The maroon-and-gold started off hot with three touchdowns in the first to lead 20-0 at the close of the opening quarter. Josh Millar was the first to score on a 55-yard TD run before Ethan Gordon made his way into the end zone twice on a 70-yard run and one-yard goal line push.
In the second quarter, the Eagles extended their lead when Millar caught a 49-yard pass from quarterback Chris Vasquez. MHS went into halftime ahead, 27-0.
In the third, Central Texas Christian put their first points on the scoreboard with an 18-yard TD run. However, MHS sophomore Andres Ruelas answered back, scoring on a 47-yard sprint. Milano was up 34-7 at the close of the third.
Ruelas scored again in the fourth quarter, but this time on a much shorter run for an eight-yard touchdown. Milano held their lead and won the game 41-7, improving their record to 2-0 on the year.
STATS— Millar led the Eagles in rushing with five carries for 117 yards while Ruelas racked up 90 yards on eight attempts. Gordon also had 90 yards on seven carries. Gael Alcala made six of his seven point-after- touchdown (PAT) kicks.
THIS WEEK— For the first time this season, MHS will face a public school when they take on Meridian this Friday at Milano’s Pruitt Field.
The Yellowjackets are 0-3 this season with losses to Itasca (58-0), Malakoff Cross Roads (24-22) and Bartlett (47-6), whom the Eagles share a district with.
Meridian is led by coach Jim Kerbow and has an experienced roster with 20 starters returning. They are led by quarterback Brady Taylor and running backs Brayden Wehmeyer and John Bernal.
The team also has some younger talent that includes sophomores Matthew Jones, Ian Gomez and Jesus Martinez.
Game time between the two schools is set for 7 p.m.
