MILANO—The Eagles found themselves out-matched in the team’s second-to-last district battle this past Friday with Granger, who handed the Eagles the second loss of their season, 45-14.
Right away, it was all about the Lions, who are the 10th-ranked team in Texas Football magazine’s most recent poll of Class 2A-II schools. Granger quarterback Nathan Tucker scored twice in the first quarter before running back D.J. McClleland scored twice in the second. With a field goal by Jose Valverde later in the quarter, Granger led 31-0 at half- time.
The Milam County group finally got some points on the board in the second half. They were the first team to score in the third quarter when sophomore Andres Ruelas punched in his ninth touchdown on the season with a 2-yard run. A successful extra point kick by Gael Alcala made the score, 31-7.
Granger continued to make things difficult for MHS, increasing their lead to 45-7.
Ethan Gordon would score for the Eagles in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as Milano lost, 45-14.
Gordon led the team in rushing with 100 yards while Edison Bui was the team’s top defensive player with 12 total tackles. Milano played without leading rusher Josh Millar, who was injured during the team’s loss to Bremond last week.
THIS WEEK— After facing the first ranked opponent they’ve seen all season, the 6-2 Eagles will face fifth-ranked Chilton on Thursday. The Pirates are coming off a 43-0 shutout over Iola this past week. On Oct. 22, they took down Granger, 34-19.
Kick-off between the two schools is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Milano’s Pruitt Field.
