Milano started their 2019 season with an uphill battle when dual-threat Grape-land rolled into town and took them down 44-9 with 250 passing and 166 rushing yards on Friday evening.
GHS quarterback B.J. Lamb got his Sandies on the scoreboard fast when he scored on a 48-yard run less than 30 seconds into the game. The point-after-touchdown (PAT) failed but Grape-land was ahead 6-0. The Houston County squad added to their score three minutes later when Cadarian Wiley scored on a three-yard run. Lamb completed the two-point conversion to give GHS a 14-0 lead.
Another three minutes later, MHS lowered the deficit when quarterback Noah Benavidez found outside receiver Drew Demeritt open for a 26-yard pass. The game was 14-6 after a failed PAT. Lamb got Grapeland back in the end zone a minute later when he threw a 60-yard touchdown to Wiley. After a failed conversion following the TD, the Sandies led 20-6 at the end of the first.
Grapeland ran away with the game before half time when Lamb scored on a 20-yard fumble recovery and Wiley scored on a 12-yard rushing touchdown. Both PAT’s were unsuccessful. The Sandies led 32-6 at the close of the second.
Both teams scored in the third with Sandie Keizion Ashford bringing in a 20-yard touchdown run at the beginning of the second half and Milano’s Marcos Ruelas kicked a 20-yard field goal later in the quarter.
GHS scored once more in the fourth when Lamb scored on a 10-yard run early in the quarter. Grapeland held on to their 44-9 lead until the game clock hit all zeros.
Benavidez led the Eagles in rushing with 126 yards on 18 carries and was five-for-eight with 86 passing yards. Demeritt led Milano with 59 yards on two catches. Danny Cloud led Milano on defense with eight tackles. Jeremy-ah Tafao, Ethan Gordon and Jeremy Reyes each had five tackles. Reyes also had one sack recorded.
BURTON—After facing Texas Football’s fifth-ranked team in Class 2A, Division II this past week, the Eagles face the eigth-ranked team Burton this Friday.
Although the Panthers lost Dee Winters, who had a combined 1,700 yards for BHS in 2018 but Burton has six returnees on offense and five on defense including the majority of their linemen.
BHS is coming off a 16-10 win over Lexington, Texas Football’s 14th-ranked team in Class 3A-Division.
The Eagles take on the Panthers this Friday at 7:30p.m., at Milano’s Pruitt Field.
