Early first quarter scoring was enough for the Milano Eagles to get their first District 13-2A-II victory this past Friday night when they took down Bartlett on the road. 33-16.
MHS set things in motion when Ethan Gordon scored on a goal-line drive. Alejandro Ruelas’s successful extra point gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
From then on, the Milam County squad used the remainder of the quarter to tack on to their lead.
First, quarterback Chris Vasquez found Nick Grimes open for a 33-yard touchdown pass.
Then, Ruelas scored his first touchdown of the game on a three-yard run to make it 20-0 at the close of the first.
Bartlett scored twice in the second on a three-yard run and a 23-yard pass, but MHS went into halftime ahead 27-16 after Ruelas scored his second TD of the game on 13-yard run.
Although neither team scored in the third, MHS sophomore Alan Maldonado made it 33-16 in the fourth on a one-yard touchdown.
Top performers for Milano were Vasquez, who rushed for 68 yards on five carries.
Known for unveiling a Slot-T offense this season, head coach Nick Morehead’s team threw the ball more than it had all season with quarterbacks Vasquez and Jayce Todd throwing the pigskin a combined 10 times for a total of 70 yards.
THIS WEEK—With a record of 1-1, the Eagles return home this Friday to take on Granger, a team that is undefeated this season.
The Lions haven’t played a game yet in October, but beat Bartlett 54-20 two weeks ago in their district opener and have also beat tough non-district opponents like Rosebud-Lott who are picked by Texas Football Magazine to make the post-season in District 12-2A-I.
GHS has a lot of experience with 15 of their 22 starters from their 2020 team returning and are led by quarterback Johnny Ryder, who had 25 touchdowns and 1,437 total offensive yards last season.
Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Milano.
