Thorndale remains undefeated after grabbing their second win of the 2021 season over Snook, Texas Football Magazine’s 20th-ranked team in Class 2A-II, 31-6.
Unlike last week when the Bulldogs shaped the outcome of the game with three unanswered touchdowns during the third quarter, this time the Bulldogs got on the scoreboard early.
First, it was senior Stryker Leschber scoring on an 18-yard pass from junior quarterback Coy Stutts to put the Bulldogs up 7-0 after Colton Merryman’s extra point was successful with 4:15 left in the first quarter.
Then, THS padded their lead with a 17-yard touchdown run from Jayden Clawson two minutes into the second and a 32-yard field goal from Merryman to give THS a 17-0 advantage at the half.
The Maroon-and-Gold added on to their lead in the second half with Stutts’s second TD pass of the game. This time, a 24-yard pass to senior Branson McCoy less than two minutes into the third.
Thorndale scored their final touchdown of the evening on a goal-line run from senior Hayden Kylberg five seconds into the final quarter.
Snook’s Chevy Barker scored the Blue Jays’ only points of the evening on a 19-yard pass from quarterback Garrett Lero with 3:35 left on the game clock.
The Bulldogs also had a good night on the other side of the ball, holding SHS to 53 yards.
CENTERVILLE—The Bulldogs stay at home one more week before two weeks on the road to face Centerville, a 1-1 team coming off a 27-19 loss to Class 3A Corrigan-Camden on the road last week.
The Tigers are picked to finsh second in District 11-2A-I behind Normangee, who is ranked 10th in the latest TF poll and only had to replace three starters on defense and four on offense with 15 of their starters back.
The Leon County school stays on the ground for the most part with multiple running backs including LaVodrick Phillips, Angel Villarreal and Paxton Hancock, the Tiger quarterback who rushed for 523 yards in 2020 before suffering a broken femur just five weeks into the season.
On defense, they’re led by Villareal, who had 89 tackles at linebacker in 2020.
Gametime is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
BULLDOG JV—Thorndale’s varsity football team played Snook this past week, but due to a schedule change in week one, Thorndale’s junior varsity had the opportunity to play the Blue Jays two weeks in a row.
In their first meeting THS opened up their season at home, beating the Blue Jays 40-6.
THS had scoring early on from Noah Crabtree on a 75-yard run and a nine-yard TD run by Kaden Kovar.
Blake Roberts and Jace Easley also scored during the game.
In this past Thursday’s rematch, Thorndale shutout Snook 34-0 at their place.
Tristian Griffith got things going after recovering a fumble in the end zone for the first Bulldog touch down of the night. Kovar, Crabtree and Evan Wilhite also scored during the evening.
THIS WEEK—Thorndale JV hits the road again Thursday evening to play Centerville.
Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
