Both Rockdale High School powerlifting teams felt a sense of satisfaction at the close of the Giddings Invitational late Saturday afternoon, with four lifters winning their division, one second place finisher, three bronze medalists and one Tiger ending the day in fourth.
“For a first meet, it went about how I expected for the young ones,” said Jacob Campsey, RHS head powerlifting coach. “My lifters with experience did extremely well for the first meet of the year.”
Of those seasoned competitors were 2019 regional qualifier Jesenia Navarro, who won the 114-pound weight class with a squat of 205, bench press of 205 and dead lift of 225 for a total weight of 535 pounds.
Two-time regional qualifier Mackenzie Musto also left with a gold medal winning the 132-pound class with a squat of 250, bench press of 160 and dead lift of 285 for an end total of 695.
Musto also won the meet award for “Best Lifter on Lighter Platforms”.
Jena Locklin also won her weight class, squatting 260, benching 125 and dead lifting 260 for 645 to win the 148-pound weight class.
Campsey told the Reporter last year that he saw Locklin as a regional hopeful.
Other top finishers for the Lady Tigers were sophomore Taytum Young, who was two places behind Musto for third in her first ever high school powerlifting meet with a 210 squat, 125-pound bench press and 205 dead lift for 540.
Young’s classmate Haven Jimenez, placed third in the 181 with a squat of 245, bench of 130 and dead lift of 255 for a total of 630.

TIGERS–For the boys, two-time regional qualifier Jeovanny Navarro opened the season with a meet win.
Navarro was the top lifter in the 132 class with a squat of 280, bench press of 220 and dead lift of 305 for a total of 805, beating out second place by 70 pounds in a field with six other competitors.
