RHS tennis teams struggle through first tournament of season in Pflugerville

Murphy’s Law was in full effect for Rockdale tennis teams last Friday. Sickness, weather and scheduling got in the way of players getting on the court for the first time in the 2019 season in Pflugerville.

The 2018 mixed doubles state champion duo Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez were sidelined when Whitsel got the flu the day before they were to go to Pflugerville Connally High School.

Gonzalez went solo and was scheduled to play in the girl’s singles division.

When her Coach Kristy Kaufman and she arrived, it was raining.

“We got to the tournament after seven,” Kaufmann said. “But with the rain delay, we ended up squeegeeing the court for the next couple of hours so it could be dry enough to play matches on. She finally started playing around noon.”

Gonzalez lost 8-5 to Sierra Gierson-Linnsen from Round Rock High School.

Due to the long delay, this forced the tourney organizers to eliminate all consolation matches, meaning Gonzalez only got to play one match that day.

“It’s unfortunate, but that happens when you have bad weather,” Kaufman said.

The Rockdale tennis teams play their next tournament at Georgetown High School on Friday, Feb. 8.

The rest of the team was sidelined due basketball scheduling conflicts.
