After five seasons in Thorndale, Scott Hawkins has left the school to become head football coach at Liberty Hill High School.
“My life is changing,” Hawkins said. “I used to be a coach at Liberty Hill, so I’m familiar with the area. I’m getting married and my fiancé works at Liberty Hill. My son is also graduating from Thorndale, so I feel like it’s a good time.
During his time in the Thorndale, Hawkins helped the Bulldogs turn their entire program around. After having a record of 1-9 in his first season, the Bulldogs improved each year during Hawkins’ tenure.
The Bulldogs finished with a record of 9-3 this past season and earned a second-round playoff berth for the second season in a row. Hawkins says he enjoyed his time in Thorndale and is grateful for the last five years.
“It’s been great,” Hawkins said. “This whole town supported me through some very tough times in my life, so I’ll definitely miss them.
“I’ll miss the kids the most,” Hawkins said. “I want them to remember that I love them, and I care about them as people, not just as football players.”
Thorndale ISD Superintendent Adam Ivy expressed his gratitude for all Hawkins has done in the community.
“He’s really a great guy. I developed a great friendship with him. We’re going to miss him a lot,” he said. “We’ve already posted the job for in-house applicants,” Ivy said. “Due to coronavirus precautions, we will be using the Zoom app to hold online interviews. April 24 will be the last day the job will be posted.”
