Two Tiger athletes were named to 26-4A all-district soccer teams and three players received honorable mention nods.
German Mata was named first team all-district by the Texas High School Coaches Association for the 2019-20 season last Friday.
“Mata was definitely a game changer.” said Soccer Coach Gilberto Rodriguez. “He was always running and had the most steals and recoveries for the team.”
Fernando Gonzalez was named second team all-district.
“Gonzalez was great this year,” Rodriguez said. “He scored some very important goals for us this season and he was my right back on defense.”
Koye Bleeker, Hagan Land and Fernando Luna were given honorable mention accolades.
Rodriguez said he was proud of his team and their accomplishments.
“This was an outstanding group of kids.” Rodriguez said. “I feel like everyone played their part very well, and I am very proud of that.”
The soccer team, which struggled through injuries, ended its season one game shy of a complete schedule due to the school closing because of the COVID-19 virus.
The Tigers ended their season with a 3-9 district record and 5-14-2 overall. It is the team’s third year in existence.
They competed in District 26-4A against 4, 5 and 6A schools.
After this year’s realignment, the Tigers will compete in District 19-4A.
The teams making up the district include: Caldwell, Cameron, Giddings, Hearne, La Grange, Rockdale and Smithville.
Tentative dates for the first day of soccer practice next year is Dec. 2 and the first day of scrimmages will be Jan. 2, 2021.
