Milam Country is grieving after former Cameron Yoe running back Traion Smith drowned in a fishing accident Sunday.

Smith, 22, of Cameron, died after the small boat he was fishing in with Desmond Williams, 30, of Temple overturned, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The two men tried to swim to shore but couldn’t make it. Williams was still missing at The Reporter’s deadline.

Smith’s body was recovered at 5:15 p.m., and search efforts are underway to locate Williams.

Smith was a star at Cameron as he rushed for over 7,500 yards and scored 104 touchdowns. He was selected as the Associated Press Sports Editors 3A Offensive Player of the Year in 2015.
